Jacking Kirby

 It’s Jack Kirby’s birthday, and it’s commonly known as Jack Kirby Day. To celebrate, I’ve “inked” over some of his DC Comics work. I think I was introduced to his work when he was at DC, I only saw his Marvel work later.

I wasn’t really a fan when I was a kid, but I really liked OMAC and Sandman for some reason. I learned to appreciate his art more as I grew older.

Dream Boy

 

 The ultimate fate of the Simon and Kirby 1970s version of The Sandman ended tragically, with him taking his own life due to loneliness of being semi-trapped in the Dream Dimension. Hector "Silver Scarab" Hall then became the next Sandman in another tragic turn of events.

 If DC didn't fold all their versions of Sandman into the Vertigo line, I would have liked to think that Jed Walker/Paulsen would have been a good idea to be the successor, since he was a more-or-less prominent supporting character in the short-lived 1970s series. 

Exit: Light, Enter: Night

When I first thought up this cover, I was of the mind that Doctor Destiny would fit really well as a foe of the Sandman. Little did I know that the two had already crossed paths in a Justice League of America annual.

I only had the first issue of The Sandman. I never saw any of the six issues that came after, except for images on the web. The next time I saw him, he was guest-starring in Wonder Woman, and then found out that he committed suicide (in Neil Gaiman's Sandman title) due to loneliness in the Dream Dimension. Bummer.
